Just your average boy-meets-girl, girl-kills-people story...

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until his gruesome murder by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn’t expect anything outside of the ordinary: move, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, but now stained red and dripping blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

And she, for whatever reason, spares his life.

Short & Sweet: Cas is an interesting character, one who knows he's good-looking and uses it to his advantage, but is a bit too busy to care about the girls who crush on him. His job is to stop the murdering ghosts from murdering anymore. He finally is able to get a lead on the legendary Anna, who is rumored to wear a white dress covered in blood. But there is more to Anna's story and he must find out why she kills in order to stop her once and for all. There's also something about Anna that Cas can't keep his mind off of. This was another audiobook read for me and I wasn't 100% in love with the narrator, but I worked past it. The story was quite gripping and I'm curious to see what the sequel will hold.

Final Verdict: An interesting and different read, definitely a series I will be reading more of. For fans of ghost stories, curses, the horror genre or looking for something a little different.

  1. I loved this book, it’s different and keeps you on your toes :)

  2. I almost picked up the sequel today because i enjoyed this first book so much and it would be great to read on Halloween but I feel too swamped by review books at the moment. I haven’t seen the audiobook but I would probably steer clear based on your recommendation.

  3. on my to-read list. This looks like an amazing read.

  4. Everybody seems to love this book. I keep seeing it around, so I guess this is a sign for me: I need to read is as soon as possible. Lovely short review ^^
